Residential decking remains strong and recent developments would seem to support interest in the category. The outdoor living trend has been on the upswing for the past number of years and directly contributes to decking demand growth. The trend’s popularity has only soared from staying-at-home and sheltering-in-place during COVID-19 and is expected to continue as social behavior to stay close to home and staycations become more commonplace.
In certain regions, demand for pressure-treated lumber has left decking contractors and DIY homeowners scrambling to find product availability. In the wood-alternative decking segment of the category, two publicly traded companies have seen their stocks perform well. The stock price for Trex has doubled over the past year and again rebounded since the March drop due to the pandemic. AZEK went public in mid June and its stock price is up over 20% since its trading debut.
